On more than one occasion, a client has told us: “I don’t want to be a burden.” Not “I don’t want to run out of money.” “I don’t want to be a burden.” That’s often the real fear behind later-life planning, and it has very little to do with the size of a pension pot.
Independence in later life is usually pictured as a financial problem. Have you saved enough? Will your money last? Those questions matter, but for many people, women in particular, who are statistically more likely to spend part of later life living alone through widowhood, divorce or simply outliving a partner, real independence depends on something broader: having the right plans, people and practical arrangements in place well before you need them.
For most of our clients, the challenge isn’t whether they can afford later life. It’s whether they’ve thought about it from every angle. A few questions are worth sitting with:
We believe in thinking ahead to keep your options open. Left too late, you may have to rush life-changing decisions, at the worst possible time.
Downsizing, adapting your home, arranging Power of Attorney and thinking about future care are often treated as separate decisions. In practice, they’re deeply connected. A housing choice affects what care looks like later. Care costs affect what’s left to pass on. And none of it works well without honest conversations, in advance, with the people around you.
Financial independence and personal independence aren’t the same thing, either. Retirement, bereavement and moving house can all leave people feeling isolated and vulnerable regardless of their bank balance. The strongest later-life plans we build account for the people side, family, professional advisers, community, not just the numbers.
This is where a lifetime cashflow plan earns its keep. Not just projecting whether the money lasts, but modelling what happens under different housing, health and care scenarios, so decisions can be made calmly now rather than reactively later. Alongside this, we help clients and their families have care conversations and put Powers of Attorney in place, so everything works together rather than being addressed piecemeal.
None of this is about expecting the worst. It's about ensuring that whatever later life brings, you feel supported, in control, and free to make your own decisions.
