The Autumn Budget 2026: What could it mean for you?

With the Chancellor's Budget approaching on 28 October 2026, attention is turning to what changes may be announced and how they could affect individuals, families, investors and business owners.

The Budget comes against a challenging economic backdrop. Higher inflation has increased pressure on public finances, with government borrowing and debt interest costs remaining elevated. As a result, taxation is likely to remain a key area of focus.

What could we see?

There are several areas that may attract attention, including:

  • Capital Gains Tax – There has been renewed speculation about further reform of Capital Gains Tax, including possible changes to rates and allowances. Any changes could affect investors and property owners when assets are sold.
  • Pensions and savings – Pensions and tax-efficient savings are perennial areas of Budget speculation. Changes to pension tax relief, tax-free allowances or ISA rules could all have implications for long-term financial planning.
  • Income tax and allowances – There could be further discussion around tax thresholds, allowances and how these are adjusted in future years.
  • Business taxation – Business owners may be watching for changes to corporation tax, investment incentives and other measures affecting companies.

It is worth remembering that some tax changes have already been announced and legislated for, while others remain subject to consultation or further decisions.

Avoid making decisions based on speculation

In the run-up to every Budget, media coverage often fuels speculation about possible tax changes. However, not everything that is discussed becomes government policy.

A recent example is pension tax-free cash. Ahead of previous Budgets, there was widespread speculation that the rules would change, yet no such changes were introduced, with the 2025 Budget confirming the tax-free lump sum would remain unchanged.

This serves as a useful reminder that financial decisions are best based on your personal circumstances, long-term objectives and current legislation, rather than predictions about what might be announced.
