Celebrating 14 years of Carbon and one incredible career!

Sunshine, segways, and an emotional farewell, our 14th birthday bash had it all.

Last Friday, the Carbon team came together for a day of celebration, competition, and reflection as we marked two special occasions: Carbon’s 14th birthday and the retirement of our much-loved colleague, Barry O’Neill.

With blue skies and a warm breeze making for perfect conditions, we kicked off the day at Cluny Clays in Kirkcaldy. The team was split into smaller groups and then set loose on a series of activities designed for fun, team building and more than a little competition.

There was Air Rifles, Crazy Golf, Clay Pigeon Shooting and Segways as nothing says team bonding like zooming around on two wheels and shooting at things – although there were some hidden speed demons and sharpshooters in our midst.

After a fantastic morning of laughter, deflated egos, and a game of chicken between an inanimate object and a segway, the team made their way to Edinburgh for a team lunch.

After lunch, we took time to celebrate two big milestones: Carbon’s 14th birthday and the retirement of our Investment Director Barry O’Neill.

Managing Director Gordon Wilson shared a few words about the journey over the last 14-years, the contribution the team has made along the way, and all the exciting things that lay in store as we look ahead.

Gordon then moved to the bittersweet topic of having to say goodbye to our friend and colleague Barry. After a professional career between the two that has encompassed the whole of Carbon’s 14-year journey and beyond, Gordon had various stories of the time they’ve spent together (some less flattering than others!) and the colossal contribution Barry has made to the business.

Barry’s farewell speech demonstrated what we already knew about the man, which was an unwavering commitment to coherent & sensible investing and a passion for purpose driven financial planning. This has seen him help countless individuals and families achieve their own dreams of retirement and financial freedom, so why we’ll miss him dearly we think it only fair he pursues his own dreams of retirement and writing the rest of his life story.

All in all, it was a day that perfectly captured the Carbon spirit of fun, energy and taking time to celebrate the amazing people (both clients and staff) that make this place special.

Here’s to 14 years of Carbon, to Barry’s incredible legacy, and to the exciting chapters still to come. 🎉
