Carbon Financial joins the Mindful Business Charter

We are very proud to announce that we joined the Mindful Business Charter on the 13th May 2021.

The Mindful Business Charter is a registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation which now has 80 like-minded signatories, collectively committed to changing working practices to improve employees’ mental health and wellbeing while boosting effective working and productivity.

Mary Peterson, chair of the trustees and Head of Talent and Learning at Addleshaw Goddard LLP, and one of the founders of MBC, explains:

“The last 12 months have been challenging for many businesses, with employees grappling with a new concept of ‘living at work’ and a lack of boundaries. As such, the MBC, with its focus on reducing avoidable stress and helping to maintain boundaries to promote better wellbeing, is more relevant than ever. In that context, it is fantastic to welcome so many new businesses that are demonstrating their public commitment to healthier working practices and positive change by joining our growing group of signatories.”

Wellbeing and mental health is right at the top of Carbon’s agenda, and in 2020, five of the team trained as Mental Health First Aiders, while the entire team received mental health awareness training and support. We also introduced additional time off for wellbeing and have established our own Mental Health Team and Channel on our intranet. Other initiatives are currently underway.

Operations Director Shireen Fernie sees the MBC as an excellent fit for Carbon’s own initiatives:

“The Charter supports the work we are doing perfectly. In nurturing a culture that supports a kinder, fairer workplace, it in turn supports our own values. We’re delighted to be joining and look forward to the contribution we can make.”

Along with seeking to improve their own practices, each signatory to the Charter commits to supporting the wider business community. Richard Martin, director of byrne·dean and lead on their MBC work, explains it like this:

“At times of great challenge and change, simple truths and values that are truly cherished provide us with the direction and answers we need to guide us through. The Charter is simple – be more mindful, more aware of the impact we have on each other, and give each other the permission to talk about it, to be brave, and to ask for what we need to enable us to function at our best and to thrive.”
