Carbon Crowned Business Fives Champions!

At the end of November, we entered a team into the Edinburgh, Winter Business Fives football tournament held at Portobello Powerleague. Business Fives run sports tournaments throughout the UK with the teams that enter raising money for a variety of charities.

Carbon’s dream team – Connor Donnelly, Fraser Hill, Andrew Hogg, Darren Lees, and Michael Wilson, traded their office shoes for football boots and hit the pitch for a great cause: Movember. And no, it’s not just about growing questionable moustaches for a month. Movember is the leading charity tackling the big issues in men’s health, from mental health and suicide prevention to prostate and testicular cancer. Since 2003, they’ve funded over 1,320 projects worldwide. In short, they’re saving lives, so we thought this would be a great charity to play for and contribute to.

The Tournament: From Zero to Hero

Things didn’t start quite as planned. Our first game ended in a 1-0 defeat but we dusted ourselves off and channelled our inner comeback kings. From there, it was win after win – a masterclass in teamwork, grit, and maybe a little luck.

Fast forward to the Champions League final: Carbon vs Scottish Water. They were good. Really good. But we were better. A 3-1 victory sealed the deal, crowning us tournament champions and booking our ticket to the national finals in Leeds next year. Not bad for a team that started the day wondering if their boots were on the right feet!

Star Performances

  • Andrew Hogg: Golden Glove winner (least goals conceded). Basically, a human wall.
  • Darren Lees: Carbon’s goal machine with 8 goals.

Having played in Business Fives since its debut in 2016, finally lifting the trophy felt incredible. Even better? Our win added an extra £300 donation to Movember. A cracking effort all round – well done lads!
