Picture a client who, on paper, is financially secure. The numbers are in good shape. The plan is solid. Yet they sit across from their adviser and say: "I still feel anxious about retiring. I don't know if I'll ever feel ready."
An AI model could churn out a response in seconds but responding and truly understanding are very different things. It takes a person to read the room, sit with the discomfort, and help someone find their footing. That conversation, and countless others like it, is at the heart of what good financial planning is all about.
It is also why we want to be open about how we are using AI, and honest about its limitations.
We are already using AI in practical, day-to-day ways: summarising meeting notes, reviewing lengthy documents, organising information, and speeding up administrative work. These tools create genuine efficiencies, and free up more time for the conversations and decisions that make the biggest difference to our clients. Used well, AI makes us more prepared and more responsive.
Across many industries, there is real uncertainty about what AI means for the future of work. One concern we share is its potential impact on junior roles. Technology that improves efficiency can, in some cases, reduce the entry-level opportunities that produce the experienced professionals of the future. That is why we continue to invest in our graduate programme and internships, and why the Progeny Academy exists to develop the next generation of professionals who will go on to build the long-term client relationships that define great financial planning.
Some of the most important conversations we have with clients are not technical problems at all.
These conversations require empathy, judgement, reassurance, and perspective. They require someone who can listen carefully, understand nuance, and guide people through uncertainty with confidence and clarity. Even the best financial plan has little value if a client doesn’t feel comfortable enough to act on it.
Human relationships remain central to good financial planning.
We see the future of financial planning not as "human versus AI" but as a carefully tuned duet. The firms that will serve clients best are those that combine the analytical power of AI with the irreplaceable human qualities that great financial planning has always demanded.
What this means for our clients is straightforward. We are more efficient than ever, but it is the human connection at the heart of our work that makes the difference.
